每年９月２７日是“世界
旅游日”（World Tourism Day），它是全世界旅游工作者和旅游者的节日。这个节日是在１９７９年９月２７日世界旅游组织第３次代表大会上确定的，目的是为了引起人们对旅游的重视，给旅游宣传提供一个机会和促进各国在旅游方面的交流合作。选定这一天为世界旅游日，一是因为世界旅游组织的前身“国际官方旅游联盟”于１９７０年的这一天在墨西哥城的特别代表大会上通过了世界旅游组织的章程。此外，这一天又恰好是北半球的旅游高峰刚过去，南半球的旅游旺季刚到来的相互交接时间。
随着人类社会文明的提高和高科技的迅速发展，出国旅游的人越来越多。旅游业作为一大创汇产业和一个重要的解决就业问题的手段越来越引起各国政府的重视。据世界旅游组织预测，到２０１０年，全世界每年将有１０亿多人出国旅游。
中国于１９８３年正式成为世界旅游组织成员。自１９８５年起，每年都确定一个省、自治区或直辖市为世界旅游日庆祝活动的主会场。
为不断向全世界普及旅游理念，促进世界旅游业的不断发展，世界旅游组织每年都推出一个世界旅游日的主题口号。历年世界旅游日的主题口号――
